Embroidered Shoes
In addition to paper craftwork stores, Buddhist religious appliances stores, incense and candles stores, and prayer paper stores, the district of old Mungchia still has a few old stores that preserve traditional handicraft arts, such as Small Garden Embroidered Shoes Store, located at No.70 Ermei Street. Small Garden Embroidered Shoes Store was founded in 1936 during the period of Japanese colony. Till now, the store has a history of more than 60 years and is the only boutique throughout the city of Taipei that still sells handmade embroidered shoes. All embroidered shoes displayed at the store window are sewed by over 70-year-old masters by their hands. The shoe style mostly follows the fashion of Ming Dynasty and Ching Dynasty. The array of different colors and patterns constitutes more than 20 variations of graceful design. Handmade embroidered shoes are truly soft to wear and really worth for consumer to cherish that is helpful to pass this exceptional handicraft through generations.
Bamboo Steamer Store
Lunglai Bamboo Steamer Store, located at No.218, Kueiling Road, was founded in 1950 during the early period of Taiwan's recovery from Japanese occupation. Till now, its history is over half a century. The handmade bamboo steamers are not only delicate but also classic. Because of bamboo steamer transmitting and spreading heat slowly, it can keep food flavor and warm. The steamed food by bamboo steamer is more sweet and flexible than by mechanically made aluminum steamer, also filled with light bamboo fragrance and especially tasty. The outer layer of bamboo steamer is made from spruce. The lid and the bottom layer are woven out of bamboo slips. And finally all the parts are fastened with cane strings. The whole bamboo steamer is handmade without any metal materials at all.
