Shanghai Lao Tian Lu Food Company

Shanghai Lao Tian Lu is the most experienced Cantonese soy sauce-stewed food store in Taipei. The duck tongues, duck wings, duck gizzards, cow tripes, chicken feet here are all memorable tasty snacks. The food products at Shanghai Lao Tian Lu are divided into two categories: hot and not hot. They avoid the defects of the general practice of seasoning with hot pepper sauce and use fresh hot peppers only. Other specialties include pepper and salt walnut slices, sesame cakes inlaid with walnuts, sweet osmanthus petal snowflakes, etc., that are popular desserts of the older generation in Taipei.
Fong Ta Coffee

It makes you feel as if you walked into scenes from literature and art movies as you step into Fong Ta Coffee. On its four walls are decorated with bronze sculpture paintings of early artists, depicting the production procedure of coffee so that Fong Ta Coffee was one of the most artistic and romantic coffee shop in Taipei more than thirty years ago.

Since its inception in 1946 till now, Mei Guan Garden Restaurant has been an irresistible attraction to gluttons of Japanese food. The most famous dishes here are sashimi that is guaranteed fresh and deep-fried, then stewed pork ribs with rice. The management principles here are "slight profit and much sale", sharing delicacies and "cheap, much and tasty". Although Mei Guan Garden Restaurant adopts the low price strategy, it still keeps enough quantity of food and attracts many passers-by. New customers find it easy to become regular patrons so that it is difficult to find empty seats at meal time at Mei Guan Garden. Even at 3 or 4 p.m. there are no few eaters and no wonder the boss's brother opened another place at the opposite of Mei Guan Garden.

Mei Guan Garden Restaurant

Hong Hua Foods Co. Ltd. was originally Tai He Preserved Fruits Store in the old Tai Ping Market in 1946. It was then a wholesaler and retailer of preserved fruits and specialty foods,featuring slight profit/ big quantity, high product quality and variety to meet customers' needs.

It later established a bakery to make Western-style pastry. For dozens of years the most popular food products have been high-quality buttered preserved plums and cherry plums.

Among various Western-style pastries, the pineapple cake and the pineapple and egg yolk cake are the most celebrated items. Each is made with high-quality material and is fresh, crispy and tasty.

Cheng Du Starfruit Ice

Many Taipei residents have the experience of going to a movie at Hsimenting in the summer, strolling around the streets and finding a place to rest a while. And one of the places most frequented by tired walkers is Cheng Du Starfruit Ice. This ice shop with an outdated shop front enjoys high reputation and has been widely reported, therefore attracting waves of customers. The Starfruit Ice is, of course, the major attraction here. Its unique brew mixed sour and sweet flavors, relieving sweaty passers-by of heartburn. In addition to Starfish Ice, other fruit ice items are also available.

Goose Flat

Goose Flat at the crosssection of Wuchang St. and Chunghua Rd. is a famous old shop at Hsimenting. To have a bowl of rice noodle and a dish of sliced goose is a great delight here.

The culinary method is unique and the dish is refreshing and not greasy. The soup is excellent with meat fragrance. The owner says, the unique flavor is developed by themselves and you could never taste it at other shops. Although Goose Flat is famous, the price is fair, worthy of a try.

AHsiou Traditional Boil-Dip Noodles

AHsiou Traditional Boil-Dip Noodles, set up in 1948, is on the only old street since Ching Dynasty. The major item of this soup is boil-dip noodle made of good soup base with two slices of pork, bean sprouts and ancient-flavored noodles. The soup here is brewed with big bones and unique spices early in the morning. It is fresh, clean and not greasy and has been sold for more than fifty years. The various dishes here include pig livers, pig throats, pig hearts, bamboo, smoked goose, duck and wild chicken.

Liang Hsi Thick Squid Soup

The first manager of Liang Hsi Thick Squid Soup, Chen Lianghsi started his business on a shoulder pole near the fire hydrant at Lung-shan Temple in 1921. This shop is now run by the third generation and is one of the most acclaimed traditional snack shops. The features of it are that they prepare squids and fish balls separately and the soup base is delicious. The squids are soaked well and crispy and the fish balls are made of fish of utmost quality and crunchy.
Center Shop

Center Shop deals mainly in various pickles including pickled cucumbers, bamboo shoot strips, soy bean paste, hot soy bean paste, hot pickles, assorted pickles and dried radish etc. Among these, peanuts, garlics, salted white squashs and salted pineapples are exclusively made for restaurants and are sold in great quantities. In addtion, Center Shop is consigned to sell almost one hundred kinds of preserved fruits and jams, various bamboo shoot strips, pickled leaf mustards and dried radishes, all of which taste good and are worthy of being consumed time and again.

Simon Tempura

Located on Kaifeng St. at Hsimenting, Simon Tempura is a snack shop thirty to forty years old. It has been widely reported on media and enjoys much public praise. The branch shop on Hsining South Rd. opened six or seven years ago. Tempuras are prepared with fresh fish paste and specially made sauce which is to almost everyone's taste. As soon as you finish tempuras, don't forget to add a ladle of long-stewed radish broth, which is going to leave even more sweet smell between your teeth. To meet customers' needs, Simon Tempura also offers meat zongzis and tofu puddings now and the flavor is first-class, too.

Chou's Meat Porridge Shop

Chou's Meat Porridge Shop on Guangchou Street was set up in 1956. Every early morning it opens till 4:30 in the afternoon. Especially from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. this shop is always full. It is famous for its rice and meat porridge, coupled with its "Soy Sauce Brewed Pork".

This kind of traditional salty meat porridge shop can be found at old communities like Mengjia, Tadaucheng, Songshan only.

Long Du Ice Shop

Long Du Ice Shop was set up more than seventy years ago. Its Eight-treasure Ice, Peanut Ice are of the best ice items. Not only the peanuts and taros selected are of fine quality and cooked well. Even sugar juice has special flavor, making customers difficult to forget.

Memory Aiyu Ice and Wanhua Hsiantsao Ice

Located at the intersection of Guangzhou St. and Wuzhou St., Memory Aiyu Ice has served its clients for more than forty years. The boss, Mr. Zhu, says, at first this shop sold pepper cakes, too, which enjoys a good reputation in Wanhua. Though they now sell ice only, they can barely raise their arms. This shop insists on using high-quality aiyu and self-prepared spiced juice base and sell aiyu ice only all year round.

Wanhua Hsiantsao Ice at No. 86-3, Shantou St. has opened for more than thirty years. It moved to No. 166, Mengjia Blvd. after the original road had been broadened.

This shop offers ice and pudding all year round and sells hot hsiantsao and original hsiantsao juice from November through April. The owner, Mr. Lin Jian-fa, says, Wanhua Ice can stand firm at Wanhua for more than thirty years because of the excellent materials used and rich-flavored sugar water in addition to the lovely noodle shape of hsiantsao. Wanhua Ice developed hsiantsao pudding in recent years, which rivals fruit pudding, tea pudding and coffee pudding.

Clear Moon Japanese Food

Clear Moon Japanese Food opened at the time of the restoration of Taiwan, which the Taiwanese manager received from its Japanese owner to carry on. The shop operated on Neijiang St. till 1958, and then moved to the present Chengdu Rd. The second son and daughter-in-law of the second generation inherited the shop in 1977 and has served its customers till now. Clear Moon makes it the first priority to let customers have their fill safely. Especially dealing with sashimi, the kitchen always uses fresh fish, clean cooking and cutting to keep guests and hosts happy.
